SEO Tips

SEO Tips Trying to understand search engine optimisation can be confusing and daunting. Whether you're a new or seasoned business owner there are some basic techniques you should know to make sure your website is completely optimised.

I have summarised the confusing technical jargon that consists of "search engine optimisation" into laymen's terms to better help you understand how to make sure your website is SEO friendly.

Make sure that web crawlers can easily index the content on your site. A quick way to tell if your content is indexable is - if you can copy and paste it, then it is indexable. This means the text and any graphics on the page are separate layers, making the text-based content easy to index.

Add a site map. Site maps essentially create a road map of your website, ensuring that all the content on all your pages can be effortlessly indexed. Don't worry if you do not know how to create a sitemap. Go to "XML sitemaps.com" to download a free XML sitemap.

Choose keywords that are relevant to the content of the page. Relevancy is a "key" factor in SEO. Try and stick with 2-3 keywords per page. Adding too many keywords only creates confusion when trying to determine the pages specific topic.

Create custom page titles for all the pages of your site that you want optimised. If possible, use the keywords listed in your meta-tag. Web crawlers scan the title of you page looking for keywords and relevancy that matches your keywords and content within the page.

Create custom meta descriptions for all your pages. Again, crawlers are scanning this description looking for matches to your keywords. Be sure to incorporate these in your description. Keep in mind that only 23 words will be displayed under your link on the search results page. Choose your words wisely.

Don't under estimate the power of the H-tags. These heading tags tell search engines that this content is important and needs to be given special attention. Try and utilise keywords here as well.

If possible try to integrate keywords in your domain name. This may not be as easy, but incorporating them into your URL is. Simply include the keywords in the individual page names.

Write high quality, specific content. Your content needs to not only draw your customers in, but keep them there. Keep the content specific to one topic. Search engines like one topic content pages, this allows for easy identification to keyword matches. Be sure to include your keywords a few times within each page’s content.

Don't forget to optimise ALT tags - these will also be indexed for image search results.
